I landed in Andalusia with a single 23 kg suitcase, fluent in English and Japanese. In Spanish, all I could do was count and say thank you. I realized on my very first day that the local language was going to be an absolute necessity here.
Is it possible to live in Spain without Spanish? Sure. Many expats from English-speaking countries do just that. However, it usually comes with higher legal and accounting fees, and it makes fitting into the local community much harder. As a result, people often rely on networks of other expats who rarely settle down long-term. That doesn’t exactly give you a sense of comfort or belonging.
The good news? Even a basic knowledge of Spanish is enough to build close relationships and enjoy a comfortable life here. Locals truly appreciate anyone who puts effort into learning their language.
